Work with Wild Species
Wild Species are torn away from their habitat everyday, being forced to live chained, in cager or with their wings clipped. The damage done to these species is almost unrepairable. This is the reason why we want to stop the illegal trading of these animals, which harms our animal life and is causing inbalances in our ecosystem. We have statistics that indicate that in order for one animal to end up in a household, at least ten have died being captured and transported. Thses statistics are what make us work with these species trying to stop the commercilizing of these species.
The animals that are rescued by "Animales S.O.S." enter the readaptation program of wild life that is carried out by the Inti Wara Yassi, that is in charge of Juan Carlos Antezana and Nena Peña. This is carried out in the National Wildlife Reserve of Parque Machia in the region of Chapare, Cochabamba.
Eventhough in Bolivia exists a law which is 1333 (Ley del Medio Ambiente) in article 111 prohibits the domestication and commercialization of wild life by the Supreme court law 22641 (Decreto de Veda Indefinida) and 25458 (Decreto de Veda modificada),the commercialization of wild life continues in front of the authorities while they sit back and do nothing to follow through with the laws that have been passed.
The dancers in carnaval in their vast majorities use all kinds of feathers, these feathers come from animals which are in great danger of extinction in the wild life. In the very near future like in the case of the Pterocnemia pennata (Suri) which is commonly used in the dances of the Suri sicuri and the Tobas dance. The feathers from exotic birds, the furs from jaguars, and hundreds of quirquinchos are used every year.
On November 24,1999 we took into custody a tucan from home in the neighborhood of tembladerani in the city of La Paz. A big part of its beak had been ripped off while the remaining part had been infected by a fungus. This animal had a slim chance of surviving because ofthe missing feathers in his wings and tail. We faced the sad decision to put him to sleep.
The future of this animal changed radically thanks to a person that took charge of his treatment and healing process..
Thousands of wild life animals face similar situations every day. Undernourished, mutilated, and stressed are forced to live in a different environment in the hands of cruel and heartless human beings, because of incompetent authorities which don't hold down the laws to punish offenders severely making them selves accessory in this trafficking of wild life.
