Roadkill

These are animals that have been hit or crushed by some kind of vehicle, having caused very serious injuries or wounds in more than 90% of the cases. These are the cases that are our priority. The volunteers are trained to put a muzzle on the animal, drag the animal to a safe place, give a tranquilizer, pick up (if possible) to move him or otherwise apply a euthanasia, depending on the seriousness of the wounds.

As soon as we receive a call for a roadkill, "Animales S.O.S." moves as fast as possible to get a volunteer to go to the accident scene (since we do not have a vehicle of our own, the volunteer must get there on public transportation, sometimes delaying the help effort). In these past four years we have aided more than 3,000 roadkill (only in the cities of La Paz and El Alto), currently we aid about 25 roadkill a week.

Ninetyfive percent of these roadkill are strays that do not have owners. As a result of this situation, it is the volunteer that has to make the best possible decision at that instant in benefit of the animal. He/She does so taking into account the seriousness of the injury, the age and also the general appearance (if he has a chance for being adopted).

It is also true that some of these animals have owners, who are so irresponsable that even if they see their pets hurt will not make an effort to help them. This is our reality, and we cannot turn away from it because we must help them. These are three of the hundreds of cases in our records, that truely show what kind of work we are committed to.

Case 3:
Marzo 1999. In a period of only 15 minutes, Animales S.O.S. received several calls for a for a runover dog in front of the former building of the Central Train Station. The situation was so shocking that all the people that called were not even able to watch the dog until our volunteers got to the accident scene. The dog was in a state of schock because of the pain, the vehicle had broken his backbone both is back legs and his hips, had pulled the skin off his left leg and had also left his abdomen open. An inmediate euthanasia ended his suffering.
