25 lions from circuses leave Bolivia to a shelter in Denver - Colorado - USA
16/02/2011
One year after the Law No. 4040 elaborated by Deputy Ximena Flores Castro was approved in June 2009, the animals were delivered by the circus to the National Environmental Authority (excepting circus Caballini, which underwent a confiscation).
The last lion added to this group was Kimba, an elderly lion that was neglected thirsty and starving two years ago by a circus in a cage in a village close to Tarija.
Today “Rossy” comes back to our memory, she was a tiny elephant due to the malnutrition and maltreatment that received in several circuses; the last circus that owned her was The Circo Modelo Gigante de México which took the elephant from side to side in Cochabamba even knowing the elephant’s age and the fracture that had in one of it’s legs.
On December 1st 2000, “Rossy” arrived to La Paz, some people who observed how she was beaten to take her out of the wagon called us and two volunteers went to take pictures; in January 2001, “Rossy” died in the South part of the city when the circus was in front of Las Cholas, the elephant’s death ended with years of sorrow and we got committed with it’s memory to never let any circus establish in La Paz city, from that day in over and armed with pamphlets, posters done with markers and so much will we began to block all circuses that arrived to our city by taking part of demonstrations with loudspeakers in hands in the doors of the circuses in order to show to the people what really was going on under The “Big Top”.
On April 2001, the Circus Gasaui de Salomón Gasaui sued us against the Public Ministry accusing us of attempting against the liberty to work and asking us to pay for damages since we had reduced the public assistance to their show, we defended ourselves and moved on and no circus with shows using animals had tranquility to work in our city.
On 2004 we looked for a councilor in order to elaborate a Municipal order to prohibit circuses with shows using animals, our worry found shelter in the Councilor Roberto Moscoso; Alejandro Villena (volunteer from Argentina) elaborated a video with images that we had from HSI (Human Society International), in our way we convinced many councilors and finally on May 28th 2004 the first Municipal order prohibiting shows using animals in La Paz city was approved, this order was an example and the reference for the Municipal orders that took place in Cochabamba, El Alto and Santa Cruz.
On August 2009, the Abuhadba Circus went to every possible place in order to donate five lions, nobody wanted to keep them and we took the risk to make it, for one month we spent over $3000 (three thousand dollars), we finally communicated with an international organization that exported them on 2010.
Today ends a fight that started on 2000, the promise we made to “Rossy” was carried out little by little, we put all our will on it but without the help of the pioneers like Roberto Moscoso and the Deputy Ximena Flores today these animals wouldn’t have a second chance.
